acoustic guitar Archives

Ray Lamontagne wrote and sang the song Jolene, which I just heard for the first time a couple of weeks ago.I heard it being performed by the Zac Brown Band. I guess the song’s more than 5 years old and I’m just hearing it. Guess I’ve been under that rock for too long.

What a cool song, I had to pick my guitar up immediately and try to follow along. However when I tried I couldn’t find where it was played on my guitar. I thought maybe it was using a capo but that wasn’t it. So I gave up trying to figure it out and just checked online. So much quicker that way.

I learned that Jolene is tuned a half step down. Now I’m hooked, love it and it sounds so much better tuned a half step down. To set this tuning I went from standard tuning: E A D G B E and just dropped each string a half step to: D# G# C# F# A# D#.

Work schedules have made it tough to have a guitar jam for the past couple of months and I’m missing it big time. I am so eager to teach Jolene to our little group, wish I could sing as it would be so much easier to teach them. But that’s where Youtube comes in.

Other Songs In Non Standard Tuning

Some time ago I learned a couple other songs that are tuned differently than the normal standard tuning. But it can be a bit of a pain when you can’t tune by ear and have to get the tuner out and stop everyone from making too much noise. So we don’t usually do any different tuning.

Well not before this really cool Intelli IMT500 Clip-on Chromatic Digital Tuner for Strings my son bought and is letting me us, like he’s ever getting this back. I found this one Amazon.

This tuner clips on the end of my guitar right next to my capo and picks up every sound from the guitar without much interference from surrounding noises. I can now tune my guitar so fast, even if everyone around me is having a blast and making noise.

I’ve already been practicing a few songs that are tuned to a non standard tuning.

  • Copperhead Road by Steve Earl
  • She Talks To Angels by The Black Crowes

Copperhead Road is tuned to Drop D tuning while She Talks To Angels is Open E. Both sound so much better when tuned this way. It’s so much fun learning new guitar related things.

Learn The Parts of Your Guitar

What Are The Guitar Parts Called

know your guitarWhen I first started to play guitar I wanted to learn all about my guitar, not as much as I wanted to learn to play though.

To begin learning acoustic guitar or for that matter, any type of guitar, it is important for your to learn the parts of the guitar first.

It’s easier to follow guitar learning instructions if you know the name of important parts of your guitar.

Some of the important parts to remember are, the fret board and frets, tuning keys, the head nut ( "Barre" in French) and the bridge with string pegs.

Know Your Beginner Guitar Chords A Thru G

basic guitar chords

Guitar chords are the language of guitars and the more of the language or chords you learn to use the more songs you will be able to play. Starting with the basic chord shapes in the image above is a great place to start.

I made a point of learning a lot of chords shapes when I learned to play my acoustic guitar and today I am light years ahead of my of my guitar playing friends as they are limited by their lack of learning chords like barre chords. They have been playing 20 years longer than I have as well.

I really believe it’s how you start learning to play guitar that’s important. If you learn only the basic guitar chords and then stop learning you are missing so much, as my friends have now learned.

Learn How To String Your Guitar

guitar stringsIn order to use your guitar whether it’s an acoustic or electric you have to put strings on it. Knowing the name or letter of each string is important. Get them mixed up and it won’t sound correct at all but worse you will likely break your strings before even getting to play them.

Holding your guitar in front of you in the standing position and facing you of course, your strings are: E, A, D, G, B, E

You have two E strings, the thicker string on the left as you’re looking at it is the low E string and the thin string on the right is high E.

Once you have your strings memorized you will be able to follow and learn each not on every string as you go down the fret board. This will also help you when you start doing barre chords.

A Quick Review Of The Yamaha APX500

This review of the Yamaha APX500 is designed to let you see if this really is the acoustic guitar for you. With there being so many out there on the market it is always wise to read up what others think before you go and part with any of your cash.

To begin with the price is very fair indeed as there are certainly many other makes on the market that are going to cost you a lot more if you want an electro acoustic guitar. Do not however think that because it is not as expensive as others that it will be missing something as that really is not the case at all.

You will be very surprised at the tone you get from this model as it really is perfect and it will also be very comfortable for you to hold as well as play. It should be able to suit various styles of music and can be used by experienced people as well as those looking to just switch to this form of guitar.

The frets and tuning plugs are nice and tight and you really can just lift it out of the box and start playing it. It may not be the fanciest guitar out there on the market but this is mainly due to them focusing on getting the basics right in order to get that perfect sound.

Its versatility is what makes it suitable for a range of people and it is fair to say that within this genre of guitars it really is one of the best out there. The only problem you may encounter is if you are continually playing low notes as due to the thinner body it could struggle at times.

Overall though it should be fair to say that the Ibanez Talman
The Ibanez Talman model TCY10E has some the the features higher end guitars possess. At first look it is a double cutaway hollow body, that doubles as an electric. Constructed with the musician in mind who yearns for electric like playability, and the sweet sound of acoustic guitars. Featuring a on board tuner, piezo pickups and two band equalizer all as standard equipment.

It also has a spruce top and a mahogany body. Unplugged this gives it a warm though somewhat soft tone. It is when it is plugged in that its tone really wakes up. Also possessing a mahogany neck and a rosewood fret board and bridge adds to it’s sustain and playability.

Surprisingly for an entry level it has advantage bridge pins as well as die cast tuners. The nut and saddle are made from ivorex. The string action comes from the factory set a little high. For those that want to lower it, simply shaving the saddle a little bit does the trick.

Rounding it out is the electronics package. This consists of an Ibanez AEQ200T preamp and 2 band equalizer. The piezo pickup lacks the raw power and depth of a humbucker, but makes up for it with a soft clear tone when plugged in. Unplugged its sound is typical of a smaller hollow body.

Because the body is a double cutaway it is playable from the sound hole to the nut. The strings have a tight but comfortable feeling. They also come from the factory with a glossy finish that makes you stand out even in dim lighting.

Overall it is a fine design for electric guitar players who are wanting a little acoustic action without changing their playing technique. It handles about like an electric and sounds like and acoustic. Having a bass and treble on the equalizer, and a solid volume control, with an Ibanez Talman the possibilities are endless.
